Dynasty Building 101

Posted by Mack On January - 28 - 2008

In an earlier post, I was commenting on the fact that the current Patriots dynasty is remarkably similar to the Dallas dynasty of the early 1990s.  And, as painful as it is to admit…that is what the Patriots are doing.  It is a bona fide dynasty.  Granted, they have been the only dynasty that was silly enough to get caught doing something illegal that just about every single team does every single week.  Dynasties do not do things like that…but that singular act of amateurish stupidity does not change the fact that they are a dynasty, regardless of what happens against the Giants next weekend.

So, let’s go ahead and take a look at what it takes to build an NFL dynasty.  It really is simple to do, if you are willing to spend the money and the time to make it happen.  Read the rest of this entry »

Jones Decides to "Cowboy Up" for Garrett

Posted by Mack On January - 23 - 2008

Jerry Jones, in a move that was sure to stun his critics and fans alike, decided to do the smart thing and take care of one of his coaches for a change, making Jason Garrett the highest paid assistant coach in NFL history. I don’t mean to disparage Jerry in general terms, as he has proven to be a functional owner over the years, even though he continues to insert himself into situations (e.g., the sideline) where he has no business…but, I do want to briefly recount his track record for decisions regarding his coaches. Why is Peyton Manning Still on my TV?

Posted by Mack On January - 20 - 2008

As a non Colts fan living in Indianapolis, one thing I am passionate about is how everyone around me thinks that Peyton Manning is suddenly Joe Montana because he happened to win a couple of big games in January of 2007.  I see him as the NFL’s version of A-Rod.  Just like A-Rod, he makes a ton of money and is one of the best players in his sport at present, if not throughout history.  Just like A-Rod, he is almost certainly a first-ballot Hall of Famer.  And just like A-Rod, he is a machine when it comes to piling up stats.

Most importantly, just like A-Rod, I would rather have my team relying on just about anyone else during the playoffs.  Let’s look at the stats: Read the rest of this entry »

Patriots Fans Have Just as Little Class as Colts Fans

Posted by Mack On January - 20 - 2008

Last week, there was a steady whine coming from the northeast about the classless Colts fans that decided to boo a young lady wearing a Pats jersey, when she was announced as a Punt, Pass and Kick competition winner.  Somehow, the only Patriots fan that was not appalled to the point of starting a blog just to spew venom was the young lady herself.  What a surprise, the only person in the entire incident with any class was a 13-year-old kid from New England.  Assuming that her parents are Patriots fans as well, I believe we may have found the only three Patriots fans with any redeeming qualities whatsoever.

So, just to review — everyone in Pats Nation decided that the incident was the single most classless episode of everyone’s lifetime.  They screamed about it online, on radio and on television.  Then, something happened that they never thought about…they themselves had the opportunity to show their collective class on national television, and they choked.  In the words of the More Taste League commish, they did not blow it, they typhoon’d it.
