Patriots Fans Have Just as Little Class as Colts Fans

Posted by Mack On January - 20 - 2008

Last week, there was a steady whine coming from the northeast about the classless Colts fans that decided to boo a young lady wearing a Pats jersey, when she was announced as a Punt, Pass and Kick competition winner.  Somehow, the only Patriots fan that was not appalled to the point of starting a blog just to spew venom was the young lady herself.  What a surprise, the only person in the entire incident with any class was a 13-year-old kid from New England.  Assuming that her parents are Patriots fans as well, I believe we may have found the only three Patriots fans with any redeeming qualities whatsoever.

So, just to review — everyone in Pats Nation decided that the incident was the single most classless episode of everyone’s lifetime.  They screamed about it online, on radio and on television.  Then, something happened that they never thought about…they themselves had the opportunity to show their collective class on national television, and they choked.  In the words of the More Taste League commish, they did not blow it, they typhoon’d it.

At the end of the game, with their owner on the stage for the presentation of the Lamar Hunt Trophy, Bob Kraft tried to congratulate the Chargers and their ownership on a great season and a great AFC Championship game…and the place erupted with a cacophony of boo-birds.  I am not sure which fact disgusts me more, that the same fans that bemoaned the classless Colts fans would themselves be classless a week later…or the fact that the guy with the most class in the whole situation was Bob Kraft.  Yes, the same scum-bag billionaire that toyed with the entire state of Connecticut, making them build stadium plans and energizing the entire state behind welcoming the Patriots…and it turns out it was merely a ploy to get folks to pay for his new stadium in Foxborough.

Well, I can’t go on with the cherade any more — the fact that Pats fans are classless did not surprise me at all.  Not one little bit.  I mean, was anyone surprised that the fan base of the Patriots, the most annoying fans in the entire NFL, decided to take their opportunity in the spotlight to show their respect for the sport by gloating over their opponents, who incidentally pretty much outplayed their team for the entire game?  So, that is what the world of sports has become…the fans, who you used to be able to count on to have a modicum of class, are now in the habit of disgracing themselves, their team, their owner, and the entire sport.

I am not trying to sound like a treehugger here, but if I was a Pats fan, I might be worried sick, from a karmic standpoint, right now.  First of all, they cheated, cheapening everything they have accomplished during their remarkable 7-year run.  Every team does it, but not every team gets caught.  And the big teams with the most to lose NEVER get caught.  It just smacks of amateurism…but nowhere near as much amateurism as keeping the starters in to score an extra TD, or going for it on 4th down when you are winning by 14 points with 3 minutes to go, or any one of the other things the Pats did this year.

How perfect would it be if the Giants can finish their magical run and upset the Pats in the Super Bowl?  As a dyed-in-the-wool Cowboys fan, I certainly hope it plays out that way…the Gints would never be able to get rid of Eli or Coughlin…which would pretty much guarantee Dallas 2 easy W’s per year for the forseeable future.
