Big East is the Best, and It Ain’t Even Close

Posted by Mack On February - 20 - 2008

Well, it’s almost tourney time, and everyone is starting to have their opinions about the best teams and the best conferences.  I have heard a lot of talk about the ACC, with Duke and North Carolina leading the way, and the Big 12, with Texas and Kansas leading the way.  I am hearing almost no one talk about how scary the Big East is this year.  The Big East team with the 10th highest RPI is Seton Hall – want to know what their RPI is?  68.  That’s right, dangerously close to the mid 60s, which should make them a threat to enter March Madness.

I have included some numbers from Real Time RPI (my new favorite site) to back up this seemingly bold statement –> the Big East is, without a doubt, the best conference in the land…and the gap is so large that second place does not even matter.  Read the rest of this entry »

A Tribute to the General

Posted by Mack On February - 12 - 2008

One of the guys I work with showed me this clip last week.  It is a series of out-takes from a golf instructional program Bobby Knight put on many moons ago, called “Golf Your Way.”  I watched it about 10 times from last Wednesday through the weekend.  Then, I decided to watch it again after The General decided to call it a career.

Let’s get right to the clip.  Before you click the link, let me tell you what you are doing.  You are about to laugh your behind off and, if you choose to keep reading after you see the video, you are about to listen to me tell you why Bobby Knight is great.  Flawed perhaps, but definitely great.

WARNING:  THIS CLIP CONTAINS GRATUITOUS PROFANITY!!!! And I wish I had enough command of the English language to come up with a word more powerful than gratuitous.

One of These Things is Not Like the Others

Posted by JJ On February - 11 - 2008

The Giant’s win in Super Bowl XLII further cements what fans of the Cowboys, Giants and Redskins already know:  the NFC East is the premier division in the National Football Conference.  The NFC East has represented the NFC in nearly half of Super Bowls (XIX out of XLII).  However, it is apparent that one of the teams is not pulling its weight.

Team Super Bowls W L
Dallas Cowboys 8 5 3
Washington Redskins 5 3 2
New York Giants 4 3 1
Philadelphia Eagles 2 0 2

The Eagles facilities and fan base have been criticized for being amongst the worst in the NFL, perhaps unfairly. While the old Veteran’s Stadium was widely viewed as one of the worst stadiums in football, I see it as a model of efficiency.  What other stadium has an on site municipal court judge?  Peep holes also were installed to ensure the safety of cheerleaders.  Fans railed against growing commercialism by booing Santa Claus. The Blame Game

Posted by JJ On February - 7 - 2008

At a point in time where a baseball fan’s attention should be focused on the imminent arrival of pitchers and catchers in spring training or the prospects of your team, instead we are forced on a daily basis to hear reports on the Mitchell Report or whether the best pitcher of a generation used steroids or Human Growth Hormone.  Steroids, when abused, are bad for you with side effects that include liver damage, infertility, hypertension and a myriad of heart ailments.

Recently, David Cone was quoted when asked about drug testing during negotiations during the 1994 strike, “Certainly in retrospect, I think there’s plenty of blame to go around. Certainly I share some of that blame as being involved with the players’ association at that time,” Cone said. “It’s something I’m not proud of. It’s humbling. It’s embarrassing.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Emmitt Smith – G.O.A.T.?

Posted by Mack On February - 6 - 2008

Much has been written about Emmitt Smith lately, almost all of it referencing either his Dancing with the Stars triumph or his consistent bludgeoning of the English language in his current gig as an NFL analyst for ESPN.  With regard to the language, he has never been, and never will be, paid to be a scholar of any kind…he played football at the University of Florida, for Pete’s sake.  How many hours do you think he logged in the classroom?  Hey, it could be worse — he could have taken the English language all the way to F.U.B.A.R. territory, like Miss South Carolina did so famously.  If you have not seen it yet, here it is — a little bonus humor for you:
