It’s Official — The NBA Fix is On

Posted by Mack On June - 15 - 2008

Many folks far smarter than myself have given their opinion on the whole Tim Donaghy mess in the NBA.  It was the single most important part of the NBA finals, until the Celtics made one of the best comebacks Lakers had one of the biggest collapses in sports history.  I mean, seriously, it reminded me of the 2004 ALCS…sorry, I could not resist.

Man, that game was something.  It was, without a doubt, one of the most dramatic moments I have seen in sports.  Couple that with Tyree’s catch and Kansas-Memphis…and I am done for 2008.  I can’t take any more.  What a year it has been…and it’s not even half over yet.

So, let me take a little time and explain why Game 4, despite all of the drama, proves once and for all that the NBA is not legit and the fix is on.

Major League Baseball has decided to implement instant replay review for home run calls, effective August 1.  Let’s break that sentence down piece by piece, shall we?

Major League Baseball has decided to implement replay review.  First of all, it is high time that MLB implemented instant replay.  In fact, the refusal of MLB to acknowledge, in any way, how technology can help level the playing field is the second largest embarrassment of the last 15 years.  Granted, when compared to how Bud Selig has handled the steroids mess, his refusal to use technology is a distant second, but it is still the second biggest embarrassment to MLB, with the possible exception of the mere fact that Bud Selig is the commissioner to begin with.  The fact that someone with an ownership interest in one of the franchises was and is allowed to be the commissioner is an abomination.

It is just unconscionable to me that a sport that has rotating ads on the wall of the stadium behind the batter that viewers at home can see, but don’t actually exist on the wall itself…and a sport in which a computer can show us with amazing precision at which point the ball crossed the strike zone…does not have an instant replay policy.  What an embarrassment…

Tiger Woods is about to win his 14th major later today, and that is all he has to do to be considered the best ever.  He no longer needs to win 19 majors to eclipse Jack Nicklaus.  He is destroying the world’s best golfers, and a course set up for the U.S. Open, after a 2-month layoff and with a bum knee.

I see a much longer, and hopefully painstakingly researched retrospective later this week once the victory is complete, but he never needs to win anything else if he wins today.  If he wins today, he is the greatest golfer of all time.  Truth be told, he is the greatest golfer of all time, regardless of what happens today, but without a victory today, I might not be willing to crown him until he surpasses Jack’s 18 majors.

I have resisted the urge to root for Tiger his entire career…there is just something about me that likes the underdog…which is not, nor has it ever been, Eldrick Woods.  But coming off the surgery and the long layoff, there is just something extra compelling about Tiger on Sunday this week.  I can’t wait to see if he can do it.

As for my dark horse pick…look out for Camilo Villegas.

NBA Finals Game 3 Running Commentary

Posted by Mack On June - 10 - 2008

Since I am fairly certain that Bill Simmons had tickets to see the game live at the Staples Center, I thought I would take the reigns for an evening and come up with a Running Commentary for Game 3.

** ALL TIMES EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME

8:40 — Pau Gasol’s head is already covered in grease and he is just standing around before the game…on a scale of 1 to 10, how bad do you think his B.O. is?

8:43 — I just saw a commercial for Wipeout…could the timing be any more perfect for that abortion of a show?  What better way to forget about the economy and your crummy life than to see some overexcited loser covered in mud trying to run over the top of some big red inflatable balls and failing miserably?

8:53 — David Cook just out-greased Gasol…how is that possible?

8:56 — Jay-Z’s “Ain’t No Love (In the Heart of the City)” is playing during the Lakers intro…even better that it was just the Bobby “Blue” Bland sample and not Jay-Z’s rap.

8:57 — They followed it up with The Who…never mind…way to suck the life out of the building.

What the T.O. Deal Really Means

Posted by Mack On June - 4 - 2008

So, you just knew that I was going to chime in on Terrell Owens’ new contract extension, right? Lots of people have beat it into the ground already. They have talked about his performance on the field over his career, his occasional Drama Queen behavior, his apparent suicide attempt, and a whole mess of other things.

As for myself, I am going to break it down to the only statement about T.O.’s Big Tuesday that matters to me, and Cowboys fans everywhere.

Terrell Owens will be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Dallas Cowboy…and I could not be happier.
