Tiger Woods is about to win his 14th major later today, and that is all he has to do to be considered the best ever. He no longer needs to win 19 majors to eclipse Jack Nicklaus. He is destroying the world’s best golfers, and a course set up for the U.S. Open, after a 2-month layoff and with a bum knee.
I see a much longer, and hopefully painstakingly researched retrospective later this week once the victory is complete, but he never needs to win anything else if he wins today. If he wins today, he is the greatest golfer of all time. Truth be told, he is the greatest golfer of all time, regardless of what happens today, but without a victory today, I might not be willing to crown him until he surpasses Jack’s 18 majors.
I have resisted the urge to root for Tiger his entire career…there is just something about me that likes the underdog…which is not, nor has it ever been, Eldrick Woods. But coming off the surgery and the long layoff, there is just something extra compelling about Tiger on Sunday this week. I can’t wait to see if he can do it.
As for my dark horse pick…look out for Camilo Villegas.
